Do you know what will happen to you if you were to suddenly pass away today? What would your family go through? How would they handle the news and get all of the arrangements made for your funeral? You can control the situation even after you pass away if you take the time to pre-plan your own funeral. More people are taking the initiative and making all of their own funeral arrangements years in advance. The purpose of my blog is to help those who want to plan their own funerals get through it quickly, easily and knowing that their investment is protected for the future.

Why Choose A Cardboard Coffin?

Stacy Carpenter

When planning a loved one's funeral, you may be surprised at the sheer number of coffins and caskets to choose from. These can be incredibly detailed and impeccably decorated, in a variety of woods and finishes. They may also be little more than a plain wooden box. Some families may choose to rent a ceremonial casket for the funeral service before laying their loved one to rest in a receptacle that's more low-key. And yet despite all the choices on offer, there's one you may not be expecting—cardboard.

Not a Box

No, your funeral director isn't suggesting that your loved one is sent to their eternal rest in a cardboard box. These coffins don't resemble a box in the conventional sense. They're composed of reinforced fiberboard assembled from multiple layers and are designed to offer a choice that's aesthetically pleasing for the service, conscious of your budget, and environmentally friendly.

Biodegradable Materials

The environmentally friendly aspect of these coffins comes largely from the biodegradable nature of the material. They're designed to break down into the soil immediately after burial. This differs from a wooden coffin—especially one that has been finished with a synthetic laminate. Furthermore, a cardboard coffin doesn't contain dyes or varnishes, meaning that it will not release chemicals into the earth as it biodegrades. They can also be personalized more than you may expect.

Personal Messages

If the service is not a traditional, religious affair, an unconventional coffin won't look out of place. The coffin is, after all, entirely cardboard, and you can take advantage of that. Prior to the service beginning, you can encourage mourners to write a personal message on your loved one's casket. Many attendees may find it easier to write something down rather than speak during the service. You can provide permanent markers for this very purpose. Beyond suggesting mourners write a heartfelt message to be buried with the deceased, you also have the option to customize a cardboard coffin.

Photographic Tribute

Prior to the manufacturing of the coffin, you can be given the option to provide a series of photographs of your loved one (perhaps alongside family and friends)—photographic evidence of a life well-lived. These can be printed on the coffin as a tribute to your loved one. This is one major advantage that a cardboard coffin has over its wooden counterparts.

A cardboard coffin may be a surprisingly unconventional choice, but this could make it even more special on a day that, though tremendously sad, celebrates a special life.
