How Can a Funeral Home Help With Funeral Planning?

Stacy Carpenter

When someone you love dies, you may be overwhelmed with grief. This can make it incredibly difficult to make decisions in relation to the funeral. For this reason, there are some services that are provided to you through funeral home services that help to make this process a much easier one.

Obituary Writing Services

Obituaries are essential when it comes to letting other people know that your loved one has passed away. However, for many people, it is extremely difficult to write a comprehensive obituary that highlights the accomplishments of an individual's life. Thankfully, many funeral homes offer obituary writing services and they may be part of the funeral package that you choose. You will often need to pay the small fee to have the obituary published in the local paper though, so keep this in mind. The obituary is written using a basic template. Your funeral director will ask you about information to create it. This information includes date of birth, date of death, cause of death, surviving family members, occupation, accomplishments, and historical information. If there are any other details that you want to include, you can inform the director of this. For example, if your loved one was a member of the local church or a military professional, these details can be added.

Also, the obituary should include the dates and times for viewings and the funeral as well as the types of donations that are accepted by the family. You may choose to accept flowers or ask individuals to donate money to a local charity in lieu of flowers and other gifts.

Funeral Service Planning

There are many aspects to the funeral service that you may not know about. The actual service should be planned and prepared in a way that it is carried out in an organized and timely manner. In most cases, the organized service is outlined in a program so that mourners know what to expect. The funeral director will help you to plan the service and organize it thoughtfully. Some aspects of the funeral may include readings, eulogies, music playing, prayers, and the presentation of pictures in a collage or slideshow. The program will list these items and it will also include the location for the burial.

The funeral director will not only organize the funeral, but they will direct it as well by announcing the different aspects of the service. They will announce the location of the reception as well and give the times when mourners can gather.
