Loved One Pass Away Suddenly And Have No Money? 2 Tips To Have A Low-Cost Funeral

Stacy Carpenter

If you have a loved one that passed away suddenly and this person had no money saved for a funeral, this can be a difficult time for all family members involved. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to cut down on the costs of a funeral, two of which are listed below.

Cremate Instead of Bury

One of the best ways to save money at a funeral is to have the body cremated. This is much less expensive as you will not have to purchase a burial plot and headstone. You do have to purchase an urn, however, which can be purchased from the funeral home, or you can buy the urn on your own somewhere else.

A professional will first prepare your loved one's body. If they have anything mechanical in their body, such as a pacemaker or artificial bones from surgery, these will be removed. This is because these things will not burn when the body is being cremated.  Once the body is prepared, the technician places the body in a type of box, such as a thick cardboard box, and then slides the box into a furnace that runs at very high temperatures. After the cremation, the technician removes large bone fragments from the ashes and then packages the ashes to give to you or to put the ashes directly into an urn that you purchased.

Do Not Embalm

Embalming is one service the funeral director will offer you. Embalming can help preserve the body for a longer period of time to make it presentable for viewing. During the embalming process, all fluid such as blood is removed from the body and replaced with a special fluid that reduces the time of decomposition.

If you choose not to embalm, you must have the funeral quickly, such as within a day, as the body will start decomposing quickly after this time. You do want the body to be presentable to family and friends.

If you choose cremation, you will not have to embalm the body at all, which is another way you can save money.

These are just two ways you can save money with a funeral. Other ways include buying the casket outside of the funeral home or cutting down on the amount of flowers at the funeral. The funeral director can tell you of other ways you can cut down on costs of the funeral.
