What Will Your Family Do With Your Ashes After Cremation?

Stacy Carpenter

Nobody really wants to think about or plan their own funeral, but in the end, it's better for your loved ones if you take care of as many of the details as possible. Instead of your family trying to get through the planning process, they could be mourning their loss, and spending time with the family and friends that have gathered for your passing.

If you've decided to be cremated when you pass away, you will also have to come up with a plan for what will be done with your ashes. Here, you'll find a few options and a few tips to include in the instructions.

Cemetery Burial

Just because a body has been cremated doesn't mean that it can't be buried in a cemetery. The truth is, you can be buried in a traditional plot. It just won't be as large of a plot as it would have been if you'd selected a full burial in a coffin. This can make it a little more affordable.

Display In An Urn

You can purchase a beautiful urn to have your ashes stored in. They can be kept in the home with your family if you'd like. If your family doesn't like the idea of keeping the urn in the home, there's always the option of placing it in a family crypt.

Spread The Ashes

If you have a special place that you've held dear throughout your life, maybe that's the place where your ashes should be spread for your final resting place. If spreading the ashes is an option that you're considering, these are some situations to be aware of.

  • Plaque Placement: If you'd like to have a plaque placed where your ashes are spread, you will have to make sure that it's permitted in the area. You cannot place a memorial plaque on public property without permission.
  • Wind Awareness: When the time comes to spread the ashes, make sure that someone is paying attention to the wind. Disaster can occur if the wind catches the ashes the wrong way.

Grow a Tree

Have you seen the option to have your ashes grown into a tree? For this process, you'll send out for a kit and will receive a biodegradable urn with some seeds. After cremation, the ashes are put into this urn and then, when the perfect place is found, the urn is buried. Eventually, a tree will sprout and continue to grow for many years.

If you make all of these choices now, your family won't have to do it later. Give them one final gift when you pass with the gift of peace.
