For some families, having a marker in a cemetery is important even if a loved one chose cremation. If you are considering this type of marker, there are many different options available to you. Here are just a few to consider when looking to create a memorial for your dearly departed.
Flat Cremation Markers
Cremation markers are made specifically to inter cremains without opening up a cemetery plot, and they are ideal for cemeteries that have restrictions on size and height. They feature a concealed compartment for the cremains. The compartment may be hidden behind a name plate on the marker, making it a nondescript option. Visitors to the cemetery won't be able to tell that your loved one chose cremation over burial, which can be important to some families. More decorative options might include an integrated vase for placing flowers in when visiting the cemetery.
Upright Cremation Markers
Upright cremation markers look very similar in appearance to traditional markers, but they also include compartments for cremains. The compartments are sometimes hidden behind name plates, while some options make it clear where the cremains are kept. For some families, being able to see the compartments is important, as it serves as reassurance that the loved one does indeed have a final resting place. Upright markers also come in family designs, which make it easy to inter a married couple and their children or all of the siblings in one family together.
Garden Stones
For some people, having a place to visit doesn't have to mean going to the cemetery. Garden stones offer a wonderful way to create a memorial for your loved one in your back yard. They can be paired with biodegradable urns if you want to inter the cremains in the backyard, or they can be placed anywhere in the garden without cremains present. If your family moves around a lot, a garden stone might be the perfect solution, as they can be taken from one home to another easily.
Traditional Headstones
Of course, one option to consider is to purchase a traditional headstone. If you prefer to have your loved one's cremains interred in a cemetery plot, there's no need to purchase a special cremation marker at all. You can have the freedom to choose the marker that best suits your loved one without worrying about compartments or urns. If you do choose to have your loved one's cremains interred, be sure to discuss any requirements with the cemetery in advance. You may also want to look into biodegradable urns as an option for burial that is a bit more environmentally friendly.
