Burial Options For A Plant Lover

Stacy Carpenter

It makes sense to try and find the burial option that your loved one would have appreciated most. And since there are many options opened up by cremation or casket burials, you can choose something that would have made your plant-loving friend or family member happy. Here are some ideas.

Decorate Their Memorial Above and Beyond

The tradition of bringing flowers and mementos for a loved one in a cemetery is strong. But if your loved one was fond of special plants, you could use them to decorate the cemetery plot. Having memorial grave markers decorated or etched with plants is another idea. You could also replant or bring planters of small flowers and plants that they loved when you come to visit the grave marker.

You might need to learn a little bit about plants and which ones are seasonal. You could bring different ones every season to decorate your loved one's cemetery space. If you need help identifying plants that were in their garden or in their photos, stop by your local botanist and bring examples or photos for them to help you identify. You can also get some great tips on maintaining these plants at home if you want to keep some plants that remind you of your loved one.

Create a Special Landscape

Home burial is becoming more popular, and it's especially easy if you opt for cremation. When you go this route, you could have a landscape specialist create a very unique landscape setting for the urn. That might include ponds and memorial markers as well as a unique garden that they would have loved. This way, you will have a unique space within your home that completely reminds you of your loved one. And a backyard memorial makes it easier for you to visit and pay your respects whenever you most feel like it.

Get an Urn that Turns into a Plant

Here's another twist on the idea: get an urn that nurtures a small seedling. Ashes are a great fertilizer, and some companies have taken to making urns that include seeds. Eventually, a tree starts to grow out of the urn. What better way to show your love of plants than to eventually be the source of nourishment for a new tree that will last 100 years? Any of these options are ones that your loved one probably would have loved.
