3 Initial Questions To Ask When Planning A Funeral Service

Stacy Carpenter

If you are planning a funeral for a recently deceased loved one, your initial grief may be causing confusion while you are planning the service. If so, ask yourself the following three questions to help you begin planning the funeral service.

Did Your Loved One Want A Burial Or Cremation?

The first thing you should ask yourself is whether your loved one wanted to be buried or cremated. Knowing this information can help you plan out the rest of the service since there are variations depending on the method being used.

If your loved one wished to be buried, you will need to select a casket. Also, you will need to decide whether you want the casket opened or closed. If you decide on a closed casket service, you may want to select pictures of the dearly departed on top.

However, if the loved one wished to be cremated, you then need to decide whether you will have the viewing first, in which case you will need to rent a casket. You will also need to select an urn you feel they would have liked.

When Do You Want To Have The Viewing?

The next thing you need to decide on is the timing of the viewing if you plan on having one. If you know the deceased had a lot of friends and family, you may want to schedule a separate viewing the night before the funeral service. This will give anyone who is unable to attend a chance to pay their last respects.

However, if you only expect a small number of visitors, you may decide to schedule the viewing the day of the funeral. This is usually done two or three hours before the service is scheduled to begin.

Do You Want Mourners To Send Flowers Or Make Donations?

Another question you can ask is whether you want mourners to send flowers or make donations to your loved one's favorite charity instead. This is often done as a memorial to raise money and awareness for the charity.

If your loved one did not express a specific charity, you may want to select one that helps other victims of the disease from which they died. For example, if your loved one died from cancer, you may want to pick a cancer charity that raises money for research or patient care.

The above questions can help guide you through the initial stages of planning your loved one's funeral. However, if you are still unable to focus or have further questions, you may want to speak with the director at the funeral home, like Michels & Lundquist Funeral Home, for more guidance.
